Tiles have been used in the United Kingdom since the Roman times but it wasn’t until the Great Fire of London in 1666, when thatched roofs were no longer allowed in London. Tiles were used more commonly along with slate and the newer systems of today, GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) which is used in the construction of yachts, caravans and swimming pools.

Since then the design of a plain tile has not changed; the size is still the same (10.5 x 6.5) and clay is still used - although they can be made of other materials such as stone, wood and plastic. From the 1920’s, concrete started to be used. With a more regular weight and shape, and being cheaper, they became the choice of material for many contractors all over the country.
